Because Spectre laptops push the envelope more in terms of design and form factor, almost all of our recent favorite Spectres are 2-in-1 convertible models, while the Envy line tends to be dominated by more traditional clamshell laptops (though you will see some Envy convertibles, too). Spectre machines are all very thin (even the 15-inch-screened ones) and focus on portability. HP Spectre x360 15 (2019)Įnvy laptops also tend to be dapper, spruced-up systems, but Spectre models are a cut above. Recent Spectre laptops are usually a steely grey with copper accents, giving off a rich, luxury look. Spectre laptops are cutting-edge ultraportables and 2-in-1s for executives and shoppers with bigger budgets. HP uses this brand for its true premium devices, and that is reflected in Spectre hardware's build quality pricing. These laptops are far from HP's run-of-the-mill or value-first offerings. Spectre, meanwhile, is a brand reserved, at least at the moment, only for laptops. Envy is also positioned two steps above HP's entry-level machines, mass-market gear that gets only "HP" branding, and no sub-brand, in models like the HP Notebook 15. That said, in its laptop iterations, Envy gear is still a step above HP’s more budget-focused Pavilion consumer line-which are serviceable enough laptops, but not luxury options. The starting prices on Envy gear tend toward the affordable, but HP also offers a wide array of configuration options rather than bespoke models. Envy laptops exist at the entry-level and midrange price points (though HP does offer some more premium Envy models), and you'll also run across some HP Envy products that aren’t laptops at all. HP's Envy sub-brand covers a wider range of products than the Spectre line does, in terms of both price and category variety. If you’re searching for a new laptop, but don’t know what to make of either family, we’ve got you covered. These two certainly overlap somewhat (increasingly so, as laptops become thinner and lighter across the board), but some key distinctions define the two. Let's take laptops: Two of the big sub-brands for HP are Envy and Spectre.
